Regent: Gertrude Dowager Countess of Groan (in absentia, Titus 77th Earl of Groan whereabouts unknown)
Centred around the ancient, vast and crumbling eponymous city, Gormenghast rightly claims pre-eminence as the oldest known civilised settlement on the continent. Although its glory days are long passed Gormenghast retains a widely accepted if titular moral and political authority. With a powerful economy its armies are still forces to be reckoned with even if the uniforms are a little faded and threadbare.

Motto: Nihilim mutatum
National Anthem: Gormenghast has at least 144 known national anthems, all
of which are recorded in the 'Book of Ritual'. Only Barquentine, the Master of
Ritual, can tell which particular anthem is appropriate for any particular
occasion. It is popularly held that many of these, related to the more obscure
rituals, have never actually been performed and are included in 'the Book' just
in case. As a result few, if any, know the correct tune. However, this is of
little consequence as Gormenghastians are usually tone deaf. It is widely held,
within Greater Gormenghast, that the national anthem is a popular chant known as
'The Hall of Bright Carvings'; oddly this does not appear amongst the 144 anthems
in 'the Book'.
